Setting Up Your Home Office

Setting up your home office when you work from home is very important. It will help you stay organized, keep you on track, and generally make you more productive. When I first started working from home, I kept everything in a collection of notebooks, and worked in my easy chair. While it's comfortable to be able to do so, it's advisable to have either an area of a room or an entirely separate room that is designated as your work space.

So what do you need in your work area? Obviously, this will depend on the type of work that you do. Some work at home moms may have need of special office equipment, while others will be able to make due with just a phone and computer. Generally speaking, though, there are a number of items that every home office should have.

First of all, you'll need a desk of some kind. If you don't have an actual computer desk, just use a table or some available counter space. This should be where you actually sit while you're working. Be sure you have room for you to write, store your records, and that you have a healthy supply of paper and pens or pencils.

Secondly, make sure you have a calendar handy. This can be a wall calendar, a desk version, or a handy datebook. I actually use both a wall calendar and a datebook, so I can keep track of all my appointments even if I'm not at my desk. Of course, you also have to make sure you're actually using your calendar...there have been a number of times that I have forgotten to write down a due date or appointment, and that can cause a lot of problems!

The third thing your home office should have is a telephone with an answering machine. If you're going to be talking to clients or customers on a regular basis, this is an absolute must. It's a good idea to get a second line if you plan to be doing a lot of business calls. That way you won't miss a call, either on your personal home line or your business line. Be sure you have a professional greeting recorded on your answering machine.

You should also have room for a task list in your home office area. I know this may sound like a no-brainer, but seriously...each morning before you begin work, create your task list for the day. You'll be surprised at how much this will help your productivity! I started doing this, and was able to get much more done in less time!

A fax machine is a definite must. This is useful for faxing contracts, tax forms, and other types of communications that require signatures or timely information. It's a great time saver if you ever find yourself needing to fax a document; you won't need to interrupt your work day to run to Office Max!

I know what you're thinking...this all sounds like common sense, right? In a traditional office, you would find all of this stuff and more. But, many people (myself included) think of working at home, and instantly think that it's much more relaxed, and you can even work in your pajamas. Well, yes and no. You can work in your pajamas, for sure, (although I have found that my productivity level is best when I get dressed & ready for the day prior to beginning work) but you still have to maintain a certain level of professionalism. Without that professionalism, you will never succeed at working at home.

Looking to Make Money from Home???

If you really want to make money from home, you really need to visit oDesk!! I have been SO busy with my jobs I have gotten through oDesk that I haven't had enough time to write on my blogs.

Make Money From Home

ODesk is the best opportunity for making money from home that I have found, and I've been looking for years. The best part is that oDesk doesn't charge you, the provider, for searching for work! All fees are charged to the buyer, which in my opinion, is how it should be. Let's face it, if we are looking for work, we may not have the money to pay exorbitant fees!!

Make Money From Home with ODesk

As with any freelance website, with oDesk, making money from home carries a lot of competition. But with a little perseverance, you can be making money from home like you've always dreamed!

Unless you have a nice, fat portfolio available to list on oDesk (which I did NOT have) you will be competing against thousands of other freelancers with experience to back their claims up. How do you make money from home with these odds?

There are a couple of ways to ensure you make money from home working with oDesk. First, you have to realize that in order to prove yourself without an extensive portfolio, you will have to start out small. My first few jobs at oDesk, I only made $1.00 an hour. Yeah, that's not a typo, that's really all I charged!

Why did I charge so little (especially since I obviously wanted to make money from home, not lose it!)? I didn't have a portfolio, I didn't have references. So I had to start at the bottom, and on oDesk, you are competing with freelancers from all over the world, all trying to make money from home. So, I started my hourly rate at $1/hour. I also applied for any job I could find that I was qualified for. After 2 months, I had my rate up to $8 an hour, and buyers were inviting ME to apply for their jobs.

Currently, I am up to $10/hour, and I have been favorited by many providers. I have a high feedback score, which is why I can be more selective about the jobs I accept. So, my advice to you is to start off cheap...and don't be too selective about the jobs you take.

Once you have some successful jobs completed, with some excellent feedback, you will be able to raise your prices, and therefore make more money from home!

What Do You Want to Do to Make Money From Home?

Maybe I'm putting this out of order...LOL But, you have to figure out what kind of job you want to do to make money from home! There are many different categories of jobs available on oDesk:

  • Web Development
  • Software Development
  • Networking and Information Systems
  • Writing and Translation
  • Admin Support
  • Design & Multimedia
  • Customer Service
  • Sales & Marketing

And, of course, each of these categories has multiple sub-categories...you only need to choose which categories you want to work in to make money from home!

Do you have experiences with oDesk you would like to share? If so, I would love to hear them!!

Anyway, I think my entry mentioned that oDesk offers assessment tests; this way, freelancers can provide proof that they have the skills companies are looking for. I took the SEO oDesk assessment test, and scored in the top 10%!!

Freelance with ODesk!

freelance with ODesk

If you're looking to do freelance work, check out The On Demand Global Workforce - oDesk. There are many freelance job listing sites out there, but all of the ones I've found charge you money to bid on freelance jobs. ODesk doesn't.

How Freelancing with ODesk Works

When you sign up for a free freelancing account with ODesk, you fill out a profile which includes your resume, skills, and portfolio (if you have one). Odesk offers freelance workers the chance to take assessment tests to add to your profile. The other freelance websites I've been to do not offer this to their freelance members. I'll tell you more about ODesk's freelancer assessment tests in a minute.

Once you have completed your freelancer profile on ODesk, it's time to start searching for freelance work! ODesk has freelance jobs in the following categories:

  • Web Development

  • Writing & Translation

  • Customer Service

  • Software Development

  • Administrative Support

  • Sales & Marketing

  • Networking & Information Systems

  • Design & Multimedia

  • Business Services

Applying to Freelance Jobs at ODesk

Each freelance job posting on ODesk will have a Qualifications list. If you meet all the qualifications, you can apply for the freelance job by clicking "Apply". All freelance jobs you apply for on ODesk must have a cover letter attached; describe your freelance qualifications as they apply to the freelance job description. Odesk includes good and bad examples of a cover letter right under the application, so it's easy to apply to a freelance position on ODesk!

The second ODesk application screen is where you will enter your bid for the freelance job. Make sure you look at the budget, and average bid for the freelance position, and bid accordingly.

Working on ODesk

ODesk offers a payment guarantee for hourly freelance positions. How can ODesk guarantee payment? When you receive a freelance position on ODesk, you download an application that tracks your online work hours. The program takes 6 screenshots an hour of your screen, so the freelance buyer can see that you are really working. When you login to the ODesk program, your time is logged; in essence, the program is your time clock.

ODesk Assessment Tests for Freelancers

Sometimes it can be hard to get started freelancing because you have no portfolio or references to show. It's the same on ODesk. Once you have completed a few freelance jobs on ODesk, you have some feedback from the buyers; but how do you get started on ODesk? You need to prove your skills, and establish your expertise to get freelance positions.

This is where the freelancer assessment tests come in. Can you see why the assessment tests offered to freelancers by ODesk are such a great idea? Having high test scores will show potential clients that you know what you're talking about! ODesk offers tests in the following categories:

  • .Net Technology

  • Computer Hardware

  • Computer Skills

  • Databases

  • Electronics

  • English Language Skills

  • Finance & Accounting

  • General Management

  • General Programming

  • Graphics Design

  • International Languages

  • Internet Concepts

  • Internet Programming

  • Java Technologies

  • Microsoft Technologies

  • Miscellaneous Certifications

  • Networking

  • Office Skills

  • Open Source Tools & Technologies

  • Operating Systems

  • Sales & Marketing

  • Software Testing

  • Translation Skills

  • Web Designing

  • ODesk

The very first assessment test you should take on ODesk is the "ODesk Readiness Test". Until you complete this test, the number of jobs you can apply to is limited.

Now I am new to ODesk, I only signed up 2 days ago. But I am already working my first freelance job on ODesk, and have applied for several others. If you want to freelance, I really urge you to check out freelancing with ODesk!

Do any of you already work for ODesk? What are your experiences?
